What We Do in Raheem Residency |
We believe that tourism should be organised in a way that respects the culture and social values of local communities. It should also benefit them financially. The great beauty of the natural environment is also part of our responsibility. |
Recently a government survey showed that 124 buildings in our town of Alleppey deserve to be preserved. We started the ball rolling when we brought a rather sad-looking old (1868) property called Raheem Bungalow and with our architect, Mr Lalichan of Cochin, restored it to the beauty it deserves. |
Our architect was awarded 1st prize in all of India by the Indian Association of Architects for his restoration work on Raheem Residency. |
We support our community by ensuring that at least 70% of our staff is local. We also ensure that all of our services eg. taxis, printing, photography, computers etc are from Alleppey. Our food is bought locally. We contribute to local religious festivals. We support many local businesses and we encourage our guests to shop in the town. |
We support through our own and through foreign donations a Study Centre for children whose parents are illiterate. The Centre is manned by qualified teachers. This new project has now grown to include some rooms for children whose parents have passed away. And for the children of our staff, we pay 50% of their educational costs –school/college fees, books etc up to graduation. |
The hot water is solar-powered and we practice rain-water harvesting. We don’t like plastic and consciously take steps to reduce it. We have instigated eco-friendly practices with regard to energy usage among the staff and they are regularly encouraged to follow these rules. For more information, please contact our office. |
